Biography

Masaru Kitsuregawa received the B.E. degree in electronics engineering in 1978, and the PhD degree in information engineering in 1983 from the University of Tokyo. In 1983 joined Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo as a lecturer. He is currently a director general at National Institute of Informatics, professor at The University of Tokyo, director at the Center for Information Fusion of the Institute of Industrial Science and executive director at Earth Observation Data Integration and Fusion Research Initiative (EDITORIA).

His current research interests range from database engineering, parallel computer architecture, parallel database processing/data mining, storage system architecture, digital earth, speculative transaction processing, etc. He has published more than 200 journal papers and conference papers. He is serving as an associate editor of several international journals, such as VLDB Journal, DAPD (Distributed and Parallel Database) Journal, New Generation Computing Journal, IEEE Transaction on Knowledge and Data Engineering, and WWW Journal. He served as general co-chair of IEEE ICDE05(Int. Conf. on Data Engineering), a trustee of the Very Large Data Base Foundation, an Asian coordinator of IEEE Technical Committee on Data Engineering, and an advisory board member of ACM SIGMOD. He was awarded the ACM SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovation Award in 2009.

Masaru Kitsuregawa is a Professor and the director of the Center for Information Fusion at the Institute of Industrial Science, and executive director for Earth Observation Data Integration and Fusion Research Initiative (EDITORIA), at the University of Tokyo in Japan. He received the Ph.D. degree in information engineering in 1983 from the University of Tokyo. His research interests include database engine, web mining, and advanced storage system. He started Japanese web archive project since 1999 and now it has around 20billion pages. He is building a platform for earth environmental research. Its size is more than 4PB now. He serves as a chair of the steering committee of IEEE ICDE (Int. Conf. on Data Engineering), and had been a trustee of the VLDB Endowment. He has been awarded the ACM SIGMOD E. F. Codd Innovation Award. He is serving a science advisor to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japan. He served a PI of 'Info-plosion' project (2005-2011) which is one of the largest IT project in academia.
